About this Event

Join us January 13th for the first event of this type — Career Connection Event. Hosted by the Student Veterans Association of UCF.  This is not just a job fair but an actual connection event where soldiers and veterans resumes are screened prior to and at the event to match them up with participating companies.

Companies that have job slots available now  of various pay slots will be on site so this is a great opportunity if you’re looking for employment NOW.  A full range of options will be available to those with or without degrees.

Various assistance will be provided by Darkhorse Benefits if you need help with your resume, interviewing skills or just want pointers from Darkhorse volunteers with recruiting backgrounds. As well, we can show you  why your military experience is important and how to incorporate it into your resume and interview. As America’s most recent veterans you bring unique abilities to communicate, execute and be a leader at these organizations regardless of rank.

The career connection event is from 10 am to 2 pm on Friday, January 13, 2012 at the UCF Student Union in the Key West Ballroom. Business casual dress at  a minimum, and not having a full suit will not preclude screenings, but it’s suggested to ‘dress to impress’ with a nice suit to show the companies you mean business.

Why We’re Doing This

America’s returning veterans are coming home to one of the worst job markets in history. Several units in the area are on multiple deployments to the hardest hit regions in Afghanistan and Iraq. Additionally, service men and women are inclined to volunteer to risk their lives for additional deployments to face more IEDs and enemy forces because they can’t find positions here in our central Florida area.

Their skills are an ASSET! Every veteran has faced more than most their age. The intangible skills they can bring to your company have been highlighted in most major financial and employment publications. Fortune, Forbes and Time magazines have all touted “Americas next great generation of combat to corporate leaders”. Enlisted soldiers are the backbone of the military. No hill has ever been taken, no objective secured and no bomb dropped, EVER, without their efforts.

Our upcoming connection event will not be a job fair but a connection event with real metrics. Veterans are tired of going to job fair after fair with school’s just looking for their enrollment or companies just collecting resumes when what they really want to do is roll up their sleeves and go to work. Likewise, for employers it’s a waste of time to just show up and collect resumes when you can spend that valuable time meeting those that can really fill their vacancies.

Our event is focused on Darkhorse collecting the resumes of the Guard and Reserve troops as well as veterans moving to the area off active duty after we have given them resume writing and interviewing assistance. The resumes are screened by our staff of recruiters to be matched with the job description from your organization. The event is focused on one on one short introductions on 10 minute time frames to meet the veterans that matched their job opening. At the introduction is a Darkhorse volunteer working with the hiring manager on note taking and debrief comments for the veteran. After the day is over, the feedback is processed and sent to each veteran and follow on interviews are scheduled with our help to streamline the process.

This new method is invaluable to both parties. The vets receive critical feedback about their job history relating to that position, how they interviewed, what they need to work on or how great they did and what a great addition they will make to your team. The employer saves countless hours and resources sourcing the internet and checking their candidate data base for that right candidate to bring in when they can sit down with several in one hour, before passing up the chain for the formal interview.

Please join us in thanking Tremayne Sirmons as the Volunteer of the Month for August 2011.

Tremayne is a CAD specialist over at Tindale Oliver and Associates doing some incredible things in the engineering field and has recently started taking classes again at the University of Central Florida giving the teachers there a piece of his mind.

Tremayne started with Darkhorse on a trip to Disney with 120 homeless kids from the Coalition of the Homeless as a liaison for them. Since then his willingness to do, share, help and volunteer hasn’t even begun to slow. Acting by sheer love to help others, he has shown to be the poster child for adaptive leadership by volunteering to be put into foreign or unfamiliar roles and just figures it out without asking how.

From the Disney trip to the Sea world trip, Monte Carlo night and comic relief at the three-point shoot out for Hoop for Heroes, Tremayne takes the initiative in his efforts that come from the heart with absolutely no agenda. He not only helps Darkhorse Benefits, he volunteers with the Coalition of the Homeless, the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, and more if you asked.

Darkhorse Benefits founder Rob Mott said of Tremayne “I went downtown Orlando in the underprivileged areas of paramour to recruit and hang flyers for our Hoop for Heroes tournament and noticed at every court and almost every spot needed, already had a flyer hung by Tremayne. He’s a huge help”

The Vehicles for Veterans Car Show will be held on July 30th, 2011. It is included on a fun filled weekend combined with our Hoop for Heroes basketball tournament hosted by RDV Sportsplex in Maitland on the old Orlando Magic practice court. The Hoop for Heroes tournament goes from July 29th – 30th with the combination funding the operation eternal thanks of Darkhorse Benefits.

MISSION: Paying back the debt that all Americans owe to the wounded soldiers coming home from battle with life-changing disabilities. It is a program developed to retrain veterans in various computer skills to assist them in re-employment. Our goal is to recruit, train and employ these heroes in an occupation with the most chance of personal success and continued life improvement. Help us change the lives of those who put their future on the line, to protect ours.

Registration is $30, or $50 for Premium level placement in the Magic Players covered parking area. There will be live entertainment, food, and of course, the chance to see some of the Hottest cars in Orlando, all of which at the incredible RDV Sportsplex!

Jake is the Sports performance team leader at the incredible RDV Sportsplex in Maitland, FL. He is a graduate from the University of Florida and a heck of a trainer.

Jake had talked with Rob Mott, our founder, about two months ago to help with the physical training of our disabled veterans pit crew for Purple Heart Racing. Already volunteering over 15 hours of his time to training and developing programs to help our veterans, Jake in an exemplary case of a hard working, caring individual and we really appreciate his help thus far.

Basic Rules for Event

	Team captain to represent team at all times.
	First team to 15 points or 25 mins.
	Overtime if tied, coin flip determines possession, first team to score 2 points wins, Not win by 2.
	No make it take it, ball changes possession after scored basket.
	1 point inside the arc, 2 points outside the arc.
	Two 45 second timeouts per team per game.
	Ball must be cleared after change of possession or made basket.
	Coin flip to determine first possession.
	Referee/court monitor makes all calls. Arguing will not be tolerated.

An Evening in Monte Carlo hosted by Darkhorse Foundation

On Saturday, April 30th we had a night of amazing cuisine, cocktails, and casino games presented by Darkhorse Benefits to raise the funds to adopt our first family from Orlando’s largest homeless shelter. With over 150 people in attendance, participants gambled with “funny money” with the goal of winning as much as they could to be in the top 10 money winners for prizes to include, all expense paid trip to Las Vegas, Limo trip to the Hard Rock Tampa, and many more.

Mission Objective

To raise the funds to adopt our first family from Orlando’s largest homeless shelter. Also the launch of Purple Heart Racing! Our new and exciting Disabled Veteran racing team led by current Special Forces Team Sergeant “Luie Z”.

Atlantic Funding ensured all the children had great lunches and a greater time. Special thanks to Atlantic Funding, Sea World and Destination MCO for pulling this event together. An additional special thanks goes to our Darkhorse staff for giving up a Sunday and increasing our chaperone to children numbers from our Debrief of the Disney event at 5 to 1, down to 3 to 1.

The additional chaperones made for a much more pleasant trip on not only the children but the staff as well. This was a great event, reminding us one more time the “miles of smiles” that can be generated by not giving millions of dollars, but just by acting as a selfless, cohesive team.
